Review: Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris
Posted on 01:57 by Unknown
Warning: Spoilers for previous books.
I read most of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series in a binge a couple of years ago when I was going into massive True Blood withdrawal. While I much preferred the show, I enjoyed the series and eagerly awaited the next book. I got my hands on Dead Reckoning as soon as I could, but I was left extremely unsatisfied. As a result I wasn't exactly

Bookish Fun: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
Posted on 13:08 by Unknown
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen has to be one of the most adapted novels in the world. There are so many different versions out there, and while some are pretty weak (*cough*Zombies*cough*), there are a few that are surprisingly original, clever and fun. The most unique of these has definitely got to be The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, created by Hank Green and Bernie Su. Told primarily through

Review: The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
Posted on 03:09 by Unknown
I’m
not a big blurb reader. I usually scan them to get a general idea of
what a book is about, but I don’t like to know all the details. Even
when reading reviews, I tend to skip over the synopsis and go straight
to the reviewer’s thoughts on the book – especially whether they liked
it or not.
When The Language of Flowers by Vanessa
Diffenbaugh was released, reviews started popping up

Book Vs Movie: The Neverending Story
Posted on 03:16 by Unknown
The theme song makes me ridiculously happy. It brings back so many good childhood memories.
The Neverending Story was one of my favourite movies as a kid, and having recently read the book, I thought it was time for a revisit. Did it stand the test of time? Well... yes and no. The special effects obviously aren't great, and the acting is really, really bad. But the story is still pretty

Bookish Buys: 50 Shades of Grey

Out of morbid curiousity, I typed "50 Shades of Grey" in to the Etsy search box. And... well, let's just take a look, shall we?

I'm sensing a theme... Seriously, there was a buttload of this "Laters, Baby" stuff. I haven't read the book, so I have no idea what it refers to. I'm guessing it's,

Review: Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth
Posted on 05:32 by Unknown
I'm a big fan of the "true story" versions of fairy tales. Well, OK, I'm really just a big fan of Ever After, but details, schmetails. My point is when I found out this was a story about the origins of Rapunzel, I knew I wanted to give it a try. It surpassed my expectations and I fell in love with the story and the characters. In Bitter Greens, Kate Forsyth has created a wonderful, beautifully

Top Ten: Books With Vivid Settings
Posted on 03:27 by Unknown
1.The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. This one's a bit of a no brainer, right? Who DOESN'T want to go to Hogwarts? Post-Voldemort, natch. I want to drink Butterbeer with Hagrid and discuss hair potions with Hermione.
2. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. Sigh. This book is so, so beautiful - and the setting is a big part of that. Just look at these opening lines: "The unicorn lived

The Princess Bride by William Goldman is one of my favourite books and the movie adaptation is my all-time fave. So I pretty much want everything on this page.

Posted on 04:52 by Unknown
Jasper Jones is the resident outcast in the small town of Corrigan. His name is the first on everybody's lips when anything goes wrong. So when, one hot summer night, something goes very, very wrong, Jasper desperately searches out help - and comes across the light in the window of our protagonist, Charlie. With one impulsive action, Charlie is pulled into a mystery that will turn his world

Review: Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson
Posted on 07:05 by Unknown
I decided to take Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson on my honeymoon because I loved its predecessor, Amy and Roger's Epic Detour; plus from the title and adorable cover it seemed like the perfect beach read. I was wrong. For me, a beach read needs to be easy and fun - and while this was an easy read, and fun at times, it was also quite harrowing. Crying into my cocktail was not exactly

My Wedding: A Love Story
Posted on 20:14 by Unknown
I've already posted the ceremony readings from my wedding, so now I thought I'd share what we did with our guestbook. I wanted to get one that looked like an actual book, to fit in with our table decorations (more on that in a post to come), and after much searching on the internet, the best option I found - that wasn't too expensive - was a custom journal from Beauty Bound Books on Etsy. Top Ten: Books I Push
Posted on 01:14 by Unknown
I'm a [book] pusher.
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Hey, you there! Have you read this book? No? Go read it. Now. Seriously, it should be compulsory for everyone in the world to read this book. The language, characters, structure, plot... everything is just magnificent. I've literally pushed it into the hands of everyone I know.

Bookish Fun: 50 Shades of Spoofs
Posted on 05:58 by Unknown
I literally cannot get through a single day lately without hearing something about 50 Shades of Grey. Everyone in my FB newsfeed seems to be going gaga over Christian Grey. Which just makes me want to gag. On the plus side, like any craptastic cultural phenomenon, it's spawned some great spoofs. Here are some of my faves...
1. Barely Political's spot-on parody of E. L. James and her writing.

Reading Icons: Pin-Up Girls
Posted on 03:11 by Unknown
I love pin-ups, and I love books. Put them together and what do you get? Er, this post! In compiling it I went searching for a cool quote about how sexy reading is, but sadly there were none to be found. My Google skillz failed me. So I'm just going to make one up.

Bookish Buys: A Song Of Ice And Fire/Game Of Thrones
Posted on 12:24 by Unknown
I am totally obsessed with Game of Thrones. I recently finished the second season and am tempted to watch it all again just because it's so awesome and I Need. More. Now. I want to read the books but they're such a commitment. Maybe I'll just satisfy my obsession for now by buying lots of merchandise...
